The relations with Malta have been friendly and amicable ever since its independence from Britain in 1964. The two countries established diplomatic relations in January 1966. The two countries, however, do not maintain resident Mission’s in each other’s capitals. Malta has its Honorary Consulates in Lahore and Karachi, while Pakistan’s embassy in Tunis is concurrently accredited to Malta. Both countries are full members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have maintain cordial relationship and cooperate each other in all international fora. As members of Commonwealth, both countries closely cooperate on issues of mutual importance. The two countries have signed bilateral MOUU on Trade Cooperation, Visa Abolition and Air Services Agreements. and an MoU for bilateral consultations between Foreign Minister of both the countries. The Joint Technical Commission between Malta and Pakistan was established in January 1976, whose inaugural session was held in Malta from 14-15 April 1977. Bilateral economic cooperation between both the countries remain insignificant. The economic content can grow after revival of the Joint Commission and signing of the bilateral cooperation agreement between National Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Malta and Federal Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industries (FPCCI).
There is a small Pakistani community in Malta. The migration of the Pakistani community in Malta started from 70s. Presently, there are nearly 500 Pakistanis living in Malta and are working in various professionals i.e. Health Sector, IT Sector, Services Sector etc. Besides it, the community number is increasing due to employment opportunities in the skilled labour sectors and comparative lax legal procedures in Malta due to growing demand of the skilled workers.
